About Sub-Zero

Sub-Zero Freezer Company was founded in 1943 in Madison, Wisconsin by Westye Bakke, who invented the first under-counter residential refrigerator. Bakke's insight — that the freezer needed to be separated from the refrigerator with its own compressor — led to the dual-compressor design that keeps food fresh far longer than standard single-compressor units. Sub-Zero introduced the first built-in refrigerator in 1945, defining an entirely new product category. The company remains privately held and family-owned to this day, with manufacturing in Madison, Wisconsin. Sub-Zero appliances are widely considered the highest quality refrigeration products available for residential use, with service lives that often exceed 25 years.

Common Questions

Sub-Zero Repair FAQ

Yes — we service all Sub-Zero built-in models, columns, undercounter units, and wine preservation systems.

Sub-Zero recommends cleaning the condenser every 6–12 months depending on the environment. Dirty condensers are the #1 cause of Sub-Zero service calls.

Sub-Zero maintains strong parts availability through their service network. As a high-value appliance, parts are more expensive than standard brands — but far less than replacement.
