About Amana
Amana was founded in 1934 in Middle Amana, Iowa by George Foerstner, initially manufacturing walk-in coolers for a religious communal community. The company pioneered the first home upright freezer in 1947 and became a leading refrigerator manufacturer through the 1950s and '60s. Raytheon acquired Amana in 1965 and the brand introduced the first commercially viable microwave oven for home use — the Radarange — which helped establish the microwave category. Maytag purchased Amana in 2001, and when Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006, Amana became Whirlpool's entry-level brand. Today Amana appliances are built on Whirlpool platforms with straightforward features and excellent parts availability.
